We’re starting to sound like a broken record when it comes to writing about the increase in scrap metal thefts, but this has become a true problem.  An article was recently published on NBCNews.com discussing how copper theft has become like a nationwide epidemic.  Read the article here.

The article states,

“Ten years ago, copper futures traded at 80 cents a pound on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.  By 2006, they were at $4 a pound.  They are now trading at about $3 a pound, lower than seven years ago but still 375% higher than 2003.”

Although copper can be a difficult item to trace, scrap yards and the authorities are working together to try and track down these thieves. We all understand the importance of making a decent living, but we do not condone stealing!
