We’re starting to sound like a broken record when it comes to writing about the increase in scrap metal thefts, but this has become a true problem.  An article was recently published on NBCNews.com discussing how copper theft has become like a nationwide epidemic.  Read the article here.

The article states,

“Ten years ago, copper futures traded at 80 cents a pound on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.  By 2006, they were at $4 a pound.  They are now trading at about $3 a pound, lower than seven years ago but still 375% higher than 2003.”

Although copper can be a difficult item to trace, scrap yards and the authorities are working together to try and track down these thieves. We all understand the importance of making a decent living, but we do not condone stealing!

The summer season is a popular time to get your car into tiptop shape.  Have you recently checked on the longevity of your car battery?  If your car battery is on the fritz often times you’ll replace it with a new one at the location of your purchase, but did you know that car batteries are recyclable?

If at the time of purchase you do no receive any money towards a new battery with the exchange of your old one, think about scrapping your battery.  A car battery withholds 60-80% of recycled plastic and lead.

If you’re handling the car battery on your own make sure to take the proper precautions.  Don’t forget to wear protective clothing and gloves, especially if the battery is leaking!  When transporting the battery make sure that it’s in a container and is stored upright. Take the proper precautions and you’ll be happy with the profit.

old cast iron barbecue grill

Summer is approaching and what better way to welcome it than with a new grill? Of course, scrounging up with money for a new barbeque may not be within everyone’s budget unfortunately.  But before you make the idea of a deliciously cooked steak disappear, consider scrapping your old grill for some extra cash.

But how?

First it’s important to identify the types of metals your grill actually contains. The metals you should find are:

  • Stainless steel: These pieces will not be magnetic and are used mainly for aesthetic purposes.  You’ll find more stainless steel in a higher market grill.
  • Cast metal/zinc or aluminum: More than likely this is used for the top and bottom of the grill chamber.
  • Propane tank: It’s best not to scrap your propane tank, just reuse it!
  • Brass: Brass is also not magnetic. You’ll find most brass pieces in the knobs and other fittings.
  • Other mixed metals: The unused portions of your grill (whatever’s left) will fall into the mixed metal category.

earth3

As you all know, this past Monday was the ever important Earth Day! As a local scrap yard in Fort Wayne area, we truly love nothing more than the satisfaction of knowing all the scrap we collect not only puts money in your pocket…but helps the environment by eliminating unnecessary waste.

Here’s a reminder of the benefits of scrap recycling:

The National Geographic states,

“Consider the true cost of a product over its entire life—from harvesting the raw materials to creating, consuming, and disposing of it—and the scale tips dramatically in recycling’s favor. Every shrink-wrapped toy or tool or medical device we buy bears the stamp of its energy-intensive history: mountains of ore that have been mined (bauxite, say, for aluminum cans), coal plants and oil refineries, railcars, assembly lines. A product’s true cost includes greenhouse gases emitted in its creation as well as use, and pollutants that cause acid rain, smog, and fouled waterways.”

It’s important to take part in recycling weekly with your city pick-up but also to partake in scrap metal recycling. Scrap metal exports are one of the largest in the US and by recycling metals, we reduce the amount of ore drilling throughout the world.

Some of these metals include copper, steel, aluminum, brass, iron and wires, but they are often tossed in the garbage due to the lack of knowledge and sources for metal recycling. At Upstate, we’re here to help educate the community to keep an eye out for those opportunities to grab some metal and bring it to the right place.

Are you looking to purchase a new patio furniture set this season?  Did you ever consider selling your old furniture as scrap metal? Of course there are some requirements before receiving your payout.

Furniture must be made out of:

  • Aluminum
  • Iron
  • Stainless steel

These are usually the only materials besides plastic and wood that patio/outdoor furniture is usually made out of.
