A recent string of air conditioning thefts have left Fort Wayne police officers and Twin Oaks Apartments residents angry! As many as 20 air conditioning units were stolen from Twin Oaks Apartments in mid December. It’s apparent that with the winter weather conditions outside that this thief does not anticipate using the air conditioners for keeping cool, but for selling to scrapyards for extra cash.

The thief is more than likely not planning on scrapping to any local yards due to the area scrapyard owners being on high alert. There is an apartment surveillance video posted on Wane.com of the air conditioners being stolen, please contact authorities if you are familiar with this suspect.

Collecting copper wire for scrap money has proven to be quite a popular and profitable hobby. Definitely profitable, if you tend to collect enough of it- and collect it safely and legally!

How do you go about stripping your wires to collect the copper portion?  Do you choose a sharp knife? Have you developed your own wire stripping machine or did you go out and purchase one? We were curious so we ventured on to YouTube to see the many different ways scrappers collect their copper.

Here are just a few videos we found on YouTube of different ways to strip wires.

We’ve had a crazy couple months at Upstate!  But don’t get us wrong, crazy isn’t always a bad thing!  Business has been booming with the prices of copper and aluminum on the rise, but we’ve also taken on a fairly huge project. When we say fairly huge, we mean almost giant.

Case and point:

Over the past few weeks we have been busy cutting down the water tower on the corner of Carroll and Lima Roads.  This water tower could hold up to 400,000 gallons of water at a time, but unfortunately its water holding days are over.  With no use for the tower, it was time to demolish. At first, Upstate’s owner, Marty Henry was apprehensive about involving the press because of liability issues.  But to all of our surprise, the press made their appearance without any help from the business. WANE TV even caught the tower tumbling on video! Thankfully, the water tower came down without any issues and work started immediately.

It’s nice to know that the Fort Wayne/Huntertown areas are trying their best to keep the business local. Thanks, Fort Wayne!

It’s safe to say that the month of August was good to us!  Upstate Metal Recycling had a record breaking month in the scrap industry. On top of the successful scraptastic month, copper and aluminum prices are on the rise. This not only is this encouraging to business, but it also gives those customer’s a bigger incentive to keep scrapping.

Garage sales are on the rise again, believe me…it seems as though every other neighborhood in Fort Wayne is having their annual association garage sale.  This may be stressful for you when it comes to maneuvering around the neighborhood, but it can be beneficial if you’re in search of some scrap to sell to the nearest scrap yard.

Upstate Metal Recycling can help provide you with some information for easy scrapping. Believe it or not, scrap metal can be everywhere!

For example,

You Can Find Copper All Over!

Are you aware that there are several ways that copper is used in our everyday lives? You probably have copper lying around that you don’t need, that you may not even know about!

  • Wiring. Nearly all electrical wiring has a basis of copper. Garage sales often sell buckets full of worthless wires, which can be a scrap collectors jackpot!
  • Motors. Generators, small servers, and virtually anything unbowed use copper.
  • Piping. Chances are good the water pipes in your house are made of copper, and scrap pipes are everywhere. Please collect piping responsibly. It is illegal to steal copper piping from vacant homes and businesses!
  • Pots and Pans. There are still plenty of copper pans in use, although they’re less common than they used to be. This can be a bonus if you’re ready to upgrade your pots and pans set! If you’re lucky you can also find mismatched pots and pans at garage sales.

So, why not help out the planet and your wallet at the same time? Copper recycling helps everyone!   Upstate Metal Recycling takes great pride in giving you a great deal on all your steel, aluminum, brass, copper, electric wire, cars, shingles, etc. You can even ‘Like’ them on Facebook for a coupon on your next visit to the yard.
