It’s not secret that we love scrapping cars here at Upstate Metal Recycling. We do however have to admit that the scrap industry most certainly sees its share of ups and downs when it comes to the amount of scrap production as well as pricing.

We got to thinking recently about the car recycling industry… Several news outlets have been discussing the fact that GM has currently recalled over 17 million vehicles from the years 2000-2014. That’s more vehicles than they currently sell in a year. (which was 13 million in 2013 if you’re curious)

…But Upstate Blog Writer, what does that have to do with scrap?

Simple, the car market today is definitely going through some major changes. It may seem as though the trend of buying slightly used cars might seem appealing for the scrap industry, you must take into consideration that cars are made to run a heck of a lot longer than before. (If cared for properly of course!) Long story short, car production is now consuming more scrap than it generates.

What do you suppose could be the solution for this ‘scrap gap’ dilemma?
